About Us

Chennai Container Terminal Pvt. Ltd. (CCT) was built in 1983 and is the first container terminal at Chennai Port, South India's largest gateway to container trade. The container terminal was privatized in 2001, and DP World took over and commenced operations on November 30th that year.

CCT is managed under a 30-year Build-Operate-Transfer agreement set up with the Chennai Port Trust (CPT) of the Government of India. The terminal can handle fifth-generation vessels up to 6,400 TEU, with direct services to China, West Africa, Europe and the US. DP World Port & Terminal Chennai services the entire gamut of international trade in Chennai and the South India hinterland. Unlike any other container terminal in India, DP World Port & Terminal Chennai is unique in its location, in as much as the port is situated within city limits.

A city with a growing population poses its own set of challenges. Within the terminal, the biggest challenge was the limited yard space, which led to massive delays and storage costs in the delivery of containers before the takeover. DP World's efforts in process re-engineering have brought the dwell time of containers at the terminal from 7-8 days in 2001 when taken over, to less than 24 hours today.

The terminal entered the "One Million" TEU club in 2007. Over the last 13 years since CCT commenced operations, our team has made a lot of effort in building up confidence in the South Indian trade fraternity and has gone the extra mile in reaching out to its' customers' customers. In 2010, these efforts resulted in DP World Chennai winning the coveted and most sought-after Lloyd's List Middle East & Subcontinent Award for the Best Terminal Operator.

DP World Port & Terminal Chennai has maintained its focus on exceeding customer needs and anticipating future trends to facilitate and act as a driver for containerization and industrial growth in South India.

Preferred Port of Choice

Located on the Southeast coast of India, the Chennai Container Terminal is one of the most important container gateways for South India’s container market of 2 million TEUs. It is strategically positioned to offer South and East India the quickest transits to the Far East.

Focus on customers and operational efficiency enabled the terminal to increase throughput from 0.3 million TEUs in 2001 to around 1.2 million TEUs in 2008 with CAGR of 22%.

In addition, DP World Chennai links to a wide network of Container Freight Stations (CFS) and Inland Container Depots (ICD) in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, etc.

Terminal Infrastructure

The Terminal operates state-of-the-art infrastructure and provides a world-class service to its customers. We offer simplified and convenient online services to our valued customers, including electronic Form 13, electronic SSR, web access, a web-based CRM, invoice and account statements on the web, and a web/SMS-based container tracking system.

A CFS, with a covered area of 6,500 sq. m., operates within the port, offering such services as inspection, LCL de-stuffing, and delivery of import cargo with the possibilities of extension to handle EXIM FCL. The presence of the CFS within the port premises enables prompt and convenient services to importers and passengers, including swift transshipment of LCL cargo to Inland Container destinations such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kochi, Puducherry, and other locations.

Key factors that make CCTL special

Faster vessel turnaround: The four Noel Super-Post Panamax Quay cranes (single lift), one Noel Super-Post Panamax Quay cranes (twin lift) and two ZPMC Super-Post Panamax Quay cranes (twin lift) ensure faster loading and discharge from vessels.

Faster truck turnaround: With 22 RTGCs, one Reach Stacker, one empty handler and automated yard management, speedy container delivery is assured.

Easy documentation: The terminal documentation center has been adequately staffed to ensure faster clearance and minimum waiting time for trucks. The documentation procedures have been simplified.

Terminal Operating System: CCTL uses an in-house-developed Terminal Operating System, i.e., Zodiac, which is maintained and developed by DP World and is widely used across DP World Ports & Terminals.

  • Zodiac container management software is used to capture real-time information of containers getting discharged, loaded, gated in and gated out, and shifting to different locations in the yards.
  • The Zodiac application used for planning also optimizes productivity by managing and maintaining terminal business transactions and data processing while accurately recording and invoicing all transactions and services.
  • The Zodiac application automates billings, data exchange and reporting functions while capturing a complete history of all transactions and work.
  • Dynamic reporting capabilities put key information at the terminal managers' fingertips, enabling them to track performance, improve customer service and increase profitability.

Round the clock terminal operations: The Terminal operates 24x7x365. There are no closed holidays for the Terminal.

Flexible cut-off time: Export containers can be gated six hours prior to the berthing of the nominated vessel. Relaxation on a case-to-case basis is allowed on Special Service Request (SSR). This allows last-minute shipments to connect to the desired vessel.

Theft/pilferage-free operations: Round-the-clock inside-terminal security ensures theft and pilferage-free operation at strategic locations.

State-of-the-art workshop: The state-of-the-art engineering workshop ensures maximum up-time of the equipment.

Connectivity

Chennai Container Terminal is blessed with multimodal connectivity and today supports 60% of South India’s container market.

  • Strategically positioned to offer South and East India the quickest transits to the Far East.
  • DP World Chennai’s commitment to developing trade in South India has resulted in the setting up a highly robust support infrastructure of ICDs and CFSs around the port facility.
