Strategically situated on the Coromandel Coast in South-East India, DP World Chennai is today a major hub port in the Indian subcontinent. Committed to efficiency through innovation, the key growth drivers at DP World Chennai are: Continuous modernization, efficient services at minimum cost, simple and integrated procedures and a user-friendly approach.
The focus of this nomination is to highlight DP World Chennai’s status as a leading e-terminal. It has achieved the proud status of being the first terminal to have an in-house electronic solution to the documentation requirements of the trade. Recently the terminal launched and implemented an Electronic Form-13, popularly known as “E-Form 13”. This software was developed by Sify Computer Services under the guidance of DP World Chennai’s management team in consultation with the trade bodies and users.
Initially, the export cycle was targeted for re-engineering and the electronic process was rolled out in September 2006. As the benefits of the new process began to be apparent, more and more users registered for its usage until all the stakeholders in the export chain were connected. The system was fine tuned to cater to niche segments such as tobacco fumigation containers, ICD containers by road etc. Encouraged by the response and the unanimous acceptance of the new process, the team at DP World Chennai took on the challenge of developing an electronically transmitted Import Form-13. With this initiative in place, the key export import documentation requirements of the trade were proactively addressed.
The Form-13 is a document required by the terminal for routing containers correctly. The e-enabling of the Form 13 has reduced a lot of repetitive paperwork and eliminated the long and winding process of having to transfer the documents physically to each link in the business chain. Further, as the forms are filled directly by each link of the business chain, the data is bona fide. The key benefits of this process are reduced time requirement as compared to paper processing and increased data quality. This system also helps to integrate the data submitted online directly with the systems of the terminal. In addition to the E-form 13, a truck booking module has also been introduced, enabling the terminal to achieve better coordination and productivity.
As part of its customer service focus, DP World Chennai upgraded its equipment with the launch of the RF-Link in September 2006. This wireless RF-LINK connects all RTGs to a central control room where the performance of RTG functions can be monitored online. This ensures enhanced productivity and faster delivery of containers, leading to increased customer satisfaction.
DP World Chennai has also taken initiative to bar code all containers arriving from the local CFSs to the terminal. This ensures reduced gate transaction time, quick processing of documents and elimination of long trailer queues.
The future plans of DP World Chennai include linking the E-form 13 process with the Customs and Port Community Systems to ensure integrated seamless flow of information among all the stakeholders of the trade and logistics supply chain. |
